It is no mystery how obsessed America is today with celebrity life. Magazines like US Weekly and People are flying off the shelves while shows like TMZ and E!News are tuned into daily. Therefore celebrities know that when they make a move, America watches. So why not take advantage of their power to turn heads with possibly the most important presidential election in history?
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has definitely had the Hollywood stars shine on him. Early this year, a music video was released on YouTube produced by singer Will I. Am that featured a Obama giving a speech with the prominent message, “Yes We Can” while many famous faces are shown repeating the exact words.
John Legend, Scarlett Johansson and Kate Walsh are just a few of the many celebrities in the video publicly showing their support for the Democratic candidate. The video became a huge sensation on YouTube, and Obama displayed it on large monitors prior to his speeches on his rallies.
Those in the video know that with their popularity, they could grab the attention of not only their fans, but music fans as well. Billionaire talk-host Oprah Winfrey made her endorsement of Obama very public as she joined him on the road. Most would tell you that Winfrey is the most influential women on television which is in large part the reason behind the negative attacks she received on publicly endorsing Obama.
America knows how much of a difference the queen of television can make in the minds of her mainly female viewers, therefore this was one major spotlight given to Obama by Ms. Winfrey. While Oprah used her popularity with women to attract voters her way, Actress Sophia Bush used her popularity with the student demographic by campaigning for Obama at universities around the country.
The ‘One Tree Hill’ star gave speeches to students at both The University of Texas at Dallas and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, which is the shooting location of Bush’s CW hit show. “This is my home away from home. To make a difference here is wonderful”, said Bush.
Making a difference with this election is the goal of all of these celebrities. How much of a difference they can really make, we will know very soon.
