In his new documentary’ Media Malpractice’, John Ziegler interviews former Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin on how she was portrayed by the media. Ziegler discusses how the media had a large role in helping President Obama become President Obama.
Ziegler appeared on ABC’s The View on February 2nd in which he fiercely blamed the media in damaging Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s reputation and believes the country was mislead by the media in their views on the governor. Palin did a number of television interviews during her campaign with high profile network journalists such as ABC News’s Charles Gibson and Fox News’s Hannity Colmes and NBC News’s Matt Lauer, but none got her so much attention as that of her interview with CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric.
Couric did a series of interviews with Palin, which could have helped Palin, had they gone well, but instead the interviews hurt her as a candidate more than anything and made for comedic sketches on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Ziegler told Barbara Walters and her co-hosts on The View that “the Katie Couric interviews were completely misunderstood”.
Misunderstood Ziegler? How exactly? What is so hard to understand about an aspiring Vice-President not being able to discuss a significant Supreme Court case or name a newspaper she possibly receives her news from? It is not the media’s fault that Palin was not as prepared as she should have been for her interviews on national news.
Palin herself, told Ziegler during their interview that she had realized after the first day with Couric that “the interview had not gone well”, but that the team behind her pushed her to continue with Couric for more interviews during the days that followed.
Did the advisers behind Palin and Senator McCain not think about the damage an interview not gone well on national news might do to their candidate and ticket to the White House? Couric told David Letterman during her appearance on his show after the campaign ended that the governor’s campaign team was “very generous” in the time they gave her with Palin.
.They gave us tremendous access”, Couric told Letterman. Perhaps the McCain campaign should not have wanted to shine so much spotlight on Palin, as Couric told Letterman, “They(McCain advisors) didn’t want a week to go by without hearing anything from Governor Palin
Why is the media to blame for diminishing Palin’s capabilities to be the next Vice-President when it was those behind Palin who literally pushed her into the damage done to her by the Katie Couric interviews ?

Couric admitted to Letterman that her questions asked to Palin were not easy and that it appeared she was not expecting to be asked what she was asked. Couric is being nice and a professional here, but is not handling the unexpected what the position Palin was aiming to hold in our country all about?
The questions may not have been so easy but neither is being the one person who is a heartbeat away from being the leader of the free world, especially at a time when the nation is going through a very difficult state. Therefore, I really do not see what was so misleading to America about Couric’s interviews with Palin. They just presented us with the straight-forward truth.
Just like every American citizen who goes on job interviews, they are all asked challenging questions so they can be judged on how well they qualify for the job. For the job Palin wanted, no question is too difficult or unfair. Couric, just like every other member of the media when interviewing Palin was just doing her job.
It is the goal of journalism to bring awareness to the people and if that goal changes the people’s views on someone who they are supposed to trust can protect and serve them for four years, then that someone did not meet the goals outlined for their job. It is not the media’s job to meet those goals for them and it is not the media’s fault when they do not meet those goals.
The media did not help President Obama become the 44th president as Ziegel claims. All they did was present his answers to the same breed of questions asked of Governor Palin. Let us not blame the media for the candidate who succeeded in his job interview. Let us blame the media for bringing us the truth.
